Taiwan Semiconductor's 1st-Quarter Net
Profit Soared 125%

Dow Jones Newswires

TAIPEI -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Taiwan's largest
chip maker, said Thursday net profit for the first quarter in 1998 rose 125% to 6.9 billion new Taiwan dollars (US$209 million) from NT$3.07 billion in the same period a year before.

Sales hit a record at NT$15.73 billion in the first quarter, up 107% from NT$7.60 billion recorded in the first quarter of 1997.

The company said that it's operating at full capacity and that sales increased from higher production.

Hmmmm, " it's operating at full capacity", I wonder what that might mean for the chip equipment companies. <VBG>
