Tip, True, some business and govt. buyers are not rocket scientists. Are, they are rocket scientists and don't know what the word budget means. Many will find out shortly when Y2K bites them on the fanny. Also, GTW did only grow at 5%, despite the ignorance in the magazine you mentioned. This is not exactly knocking the cover off the ball.

Govt. inefficiencies have a way of self-correcting as people who work for a govt. agency also pay taxes. Stories get leaked to the press, Compaq sees where they can make a huge sale at much lower prices and it wines and dines the procurement types, or a boss gets smart. Yes, it is often later rather than sooner. But with these lower prices,
Gateway is not getting new customers and the old customer base will erode over time. I have great faith that people will eventually buy a better pc for $599 than a crappy one for $1399. And that they will eventually have their budgets cut so they don't "upgrade" until they need to upgrade. This is all happening. But I may have given business and govt. credit for more smarts than they have. It is taking longer than I expected. MB
