I guess the Kansas coffee just didn't cut it.

What a fiendishly clever way to profit from the internet! Swamp
people with ads, and allow them to pay extra for ad-free access!

Well, swamping them would be going a bit too far. I did use
the term "moderate". If there are too many ads, nobody will even
visit the site. They'd end up waiting way too long for a page to
load due to all the graphics. It's not just the irritation of the
in-your-face ads, or the screen real-estate - it's the delay due
to the limited bandwidth. Most people are still using analog modems
and in my experience with ISDN (lucky me) I don't get all that
much better throughput than with my 28.8 modem anyway.

This model is already true for network television (oldest, smallest, lots of interruptions) versus cable (older, no interruptions DURING the program) versus movie theaters (newest, biggest, brightest, but even here, trailers are ads during the experience).

I'd much prefer some way to sell my time to view ads to SI, so that they can re-sell my time to advertisers. I really don't care for interruptions, or the bandwidth sucking stuff ("spinning bologna").

But, hey, I'm already a lifetime member, so ...

Even better, have the participants provide the content, and charge them for the interaction with each other. Brilliant. Keeps overhead way down. Wish I had thought of it.
