NEC Unveils New 128Mb SDRAM Memory
Chips

NEC Unveils New 128Mb SDRAM Memory Chips 04/23/98 TOKYO, JAPAN,
1998 APR 23 (NB) -- By Martyn Williams, Newsbytes. NEC Corporation
[TOKYO:6701] has announced the worldwide availability of new 128 megabit
synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) chips. Sampling of the
new chips, which are pin-compatible with its current 64 megabit chips, has already
begun.

By offering pin compatibility, the new chips can directly replace current ones,
instantly doubling memory capacity. The devices are also compatible with the new
PC100 standard for a 100 megahertz internal bus, offering higher speed operation
when used with Intel's new 440BX chip-set and Pentium processors.

NEC has announced availability in three organizations: 8Mb-word x 4-bit x 4-bank;
4Mb-word x 8-bit x 4-bank and 2Mb-word x 16-bit x 4-bank. The chips are
manufactured using a 0.22-micron CMOS process.

Volume production is scheduled to begin in August 1998. Samples are available
now, priced at 10,000 yen ($77) each.
