Yeh, I noticed. Looking here:
 Three Months Ended
March 31, March 31,
1998 1997

Revenues $324,850 $308,388
Costs and expenses:
Cost of revenues 183,106 164,120
Research and development 63,842 50,384
Selling, general and
administrative 43,752 45,058
Total costs and expenses 290,700 259,562

Income from operations 34,150 48,826
Interest expense -- (1,497)
Interest income and other 6,460 6,087
Income before income taxes 40,610 53,416
Provision for income taxes 10,167 15,009

I can see that since they knew the revenues coming in during the
quarter, they did a good job on "Selling, general and administrative"
costs (this is where most companies fail), but did a poor job on the
other expenses. I wonder about the "Provision for income taxes", looks
a little low. If not for the low figures for taxes and administrative,
we might be going down for a test of the stock low.

Anyone else notice the substantial jump in R&D spending?

Daniel, I,m a VERY long term investor in LSI. I buy dips, hold, and accumulate for retirement in approx. 15 years.
But it looks to me like it cost them 31 mil. to make 16 mil?
Check the year to year COST AND EXP. vs REV. year over year.
