you asked many questions in one short message. I dont have the issue
in front of me right now but you would be able to find out info about this in a trade magazine like Flight International or Aviation Week. That is where i read it . I cant give you the exact issue number though , it will take me a few days to look it up.
What i meant is certainly not the fact that the FAA was abandoning the GPS concept but that they were uncomfortable with a system that was subject to possible disruption threats from jamming by terrorists or other criminal groups or just plain old systemic failure without any sort of back up. They will most likely then maintain a second system just in case... What they have now is what the airlines want to have as a back up because they are already equipped, although Loran C is said to be superior. That is about the depth of my knowledge of the issue right now.
