This is a long story to tell, but it involves obtaining an underpriced database vendor and commiditizing the database market by tying teh db to vertical enterprise apps compatible with NT. This leverages the wide third party vendor/consultant, drives down the prices of the products that MSFT spent a lot of money to develop and market, bolsters their network OS and smooths out the revenue stream of software sales with consulting fees. This is an arduous path though and needs to be thought out very carefully.
