Agree with Joe C.

3DFX has a few key aces in the hole:

#1: They are perceived as a market leader.
#2: They are the only 3D company that has developed brand name recognition.
#3: VooDooII has the best visual quality of any card shipping now
#4: VooDOoII has by far the best native performance

Also relevant is that nearly the entire base of current PC owners like their 2D card and do not want to go through all the hassle of replacing their reliable and well tested drivers. Hence, a 3D only passthrough card like the VooDoo is the best choice. I think that is a key reason why 3DFX has been so successful to date. The competition just doesn't seem to have figured it out (!)

When TSNG introduced anti-aliasing into graphics chips, every video card made had a TSNG chip. In 1993, the TSNG branding was so strong, that it was noted on most ads for video cards. Of course, management let all that advantage slip away. The next generation chip was delayed several times, and by the time it was released, it was too late.

In the end, it comes down to management. As an old engineer, I would like to say it is the technology - but it is not so.

Perhaps the management of TDFX - who currently has the ball - will continue pushing it forward, and not give up the advantage to the next start-up. I still wonder about INTC. They need new revenue sources. Feed the beast.

Good luck,
Herbert
