[virata/orctf]

hi dave and all,

interesting virata/orctf press release today... don't know quite what to make of it yet... no doubt we will hear more detail eventually....

press release (again)...
biz.yahoo.com

orctf licensing, in and of itself, doesn't seem like that big a deal... but (true to orctf form) the joint development reference bears watching... as does the (innocent) reference to voice services... ;)... also this is the first software joint development deal that i recall...

"for a joint development and non-exclusive, worldwide licensing agreement to provide Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) systems with integrated ATM software. These systems will enable telecom carriers to offer cost-effective high speed Internet and voice services to business and home users over standard telephone wires...."

obviously this is basically about atm.... seems like the co's have been working together as the "has enabled" reference seems to imply some milestone has already been reached... gotta like the emphasis on accelerated deployment and cost effectiveness (a recurring and appropriate theme)...

"Orckit, a leading DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) systems supplier, is integrating Virata's core ISOS (Integrated Software On Silicon) technology in its FastInternet(TM) and CopperTrunk(R) DSL products for the Central Office and Customer Premises.

''Together, Orckit and Virata can offer a comprehensive ATM-based DSL solution for the rapid development and deployment of DSL broadband access products,'' said Izhak Tamir, President of Orckit. ''The integration of Virata's ATM systems with Orckit's DSL has enabled us to cut costs and accelerate our delivery of ATM-based products. In turn, this is expected to meet demand for mass deployment of DSL solutions in a cost effective way.''

Charles Cotton, Virata's CEO said: ''Virata's ISOS technology is making a major impact on the accelerated roll out in the ADSL broadband local loop market. Orckit and Virata's combined expertise gives remote workers, businesses and recreational users access to high speed data and voice services over existing telephone wires using cost effective ATM over DSL solutions. "

interesting that the press release referred to dsl (and not either only adsl or vdsl or other)... would seem to imply that at least both could be included and maybe g.lite?... virata recently joined the uawg...

"We see this as an important long term partnership between our companies which will enable both companies to meet accelerated demand as the market for DSL systems takes off.''

so virata is going to be a long term orctf partner... after a quick scan of previous press releases of other licensees... this seems like a different kind of relationship (co-development / long term partnership) than virata currently has going with their other licensees... ( Broadband Technologies, CopperCom, Escalate Networks, Hayes, Next Level Communications and Westell Technologies)...

also virata is the "new" name for atml (Advanced Telecommunications Modules Ltd).. r&d located in cambridge (uk)... "Founded in 1993, ATML was spun off from Olivetti Research Labs with the exclusive rights to commercialize its ATM technology"....

am wondering about fujitsu connections... thru uk ? ... "Advanced ATM products for world-wide markets are developed at Fujitsu's European Network Products Division (NPD), based in Manchester, UK."... also uk is where fujitsu work on orctf/fujitsu adsl silicon is happening.. "Fujitsu's Mixed Signal Group in Maidenhead, UK"...

and then there's also icl (british mainframe computer maker fujitsu bought 80% of in 1990)... as a sidenote the next year icl bought 50% of the european computer-maintainance operations of bell atlantic...

and way, way, way back in 1978 fujitsu, icl and siemens were involved in a computer marketing venture together...

best wishes
