LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES: Lucent establishes Thailand's 1st digital CDMA wireless system Presswire - April 24, 1998 15:09 M2 PRESSWIRE-24 April 1998-LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES: Lucent establishes Thailand's 1st digital CDMA wireless system for Commmunications Authority of Thailand (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD Lucent Technologies today announced it established Thailand's first code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless network for the Communications Authority of Thailand (CAT). The state-of-the-art digital network was launched by CAT today. Lucent's advanced CDMA technology, developed by its world-renowned Bell Labs, will offer CAT customers in Bangkok significantly improved wireless quality, coverage and capacity. Lucent is an industry leader in CDMA technology, with more than 100 CDMA networks in commercial operation or under construction for 25 network operators worldwide. "We are committed to bringing Thailand's customers the best wireless services available anywhere. As a leader in CDMA technology, Lucent was a natural choice," said Thian Patiwejwong, President and CEO of Tawan Mobile Telecom, the official marketing arm of the CAT network. "What this means for Tawan customers is better voice quality, expanded call coverage and less network congestion, even at peak calling hours." Patiwejwong added that Lucent's CDMA technology will allow CAT to expand its network cost-effectively and efficiently in the future. Thailand's wireless market has experienced double-digit growth every year over the past several years. "Historically, telecommunications development and economic growth have often gone hand-in-hand," said John Conrad, President of Lucent Technologies Thailand's Global Service Provider business. "We believe telecommunications infrastructure will play a critical part in fueling Thailand's future leadership. We're very pleased that CAT has chosen Lucent to expand service capabilities for Bangkok customers." CDMA is a digital wireless technology based on the IS-95 air interface. With CDMA technology, subscribers are assigned a unique code which allows each user to be distinguished from other users who are transmitting simultaneously over the same frequency band. This allows more efficient use of the licensed spectrum and increases network call-capacity for service operators. CDMA technology has inherent encryption qualities that help prevent fraudulent activity and resists potential interference and eavesdropping. This technology also provides enhanced call-quality that is comparable to landline or "wired" service. CDMA reduces the static and cross-talk sometimes heard on analog systems, and provides a "soft hand-off" capability that makes call hand-offs between cell sites and mobile switching centers (MSCs) virtually unnoticeable to customers. Elsewhere in Asia, Lucent has won major contracts to build CDMA networks for Hansol PCS and Shinsegi in Korea, PT Komunikasi Selular Indonesia (Komselindo) and Pilipino Telephone Corp. (PILTEL) in the Philippines. Lucent Technologies has a significant presence in Thailand, including manufacturing, sales and service. The company's Asia Pacific region headquarters is in Hong Kong and its worldwide headquarters is in Murray Hill, New Jersey, USA. Lucent Technologies designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, data networking systems, business telephone systems and microelectronics components. Bell Laboratories is the research and development arm for the company. For more information on Lucent Technologies visit the company's website at lucent.com .
