90 Nissan 300ZX did 134 conversion cause my radiator to blow?

I just moved from Ohio to Houston. My 1990 Nissan 300ZX's A/C was cooling, but probably not the best for Houston's summer. I took it into a car A/C shop for
evaluation. Four business days later I finally got it back. They had replaced the fan. They also replaced the drier and changed to R134a. Total labor and parts was
$700. They claimed that they spent hours searching for an electrical short, and finally wired the fan to the condensor so that it would come on when the condensor
cycled on. This was in lieu of replacing a computer chip for about $600.

I got the car back on Monday. I finally needed the A/C yesterday (Thursday). I kept it on max for about 30 minutes with barely adequate cooling (it was less than
80 degrees outside). It was working almost the same as when I started. Then, the radiator blew. I took it to a mechanic who specialized in Zs. He replaced the
radiator ($400+ part) and reconverted back to R-12. He said 1990 300ZXs should not be converted to R-134a. He told me I should try to get my money back
from the A/C shop.

Questions:
1. Can/should a 1990 300ZX be converted to R134a?
2. Could using R134a cause the radiator to blow? Could the extra engine work required for R134a cause this.
3. Does the expansion valve need to be replaced if converted to R134a (it was not replaced)?
4. What do you recommend?

Thanks in advance.
