Fore To Debut ATM Switch

By CHUCK MOOZAKIS

Look for Fore Systems to tee off on larger networks.

The company next week will take the wraps off its new flagship ATM switch, the ForeRunner ASX-4000, a 40-Gbps device geared toward large enterprise networks and workgroups that deal with graphic-intensive documents.

The switch can support 64 OC-12 (622-Mbps) or 16 OC-48c (2.4-Gbps)
connections at one time, according to Tom Murray, product line manager.

In addition, the switch can be configured for various modes of operation, letting customers earmark portions of the switch for redundant service.

Mary Petrosky, senior analyst at The Burton Group, said the ASX-4000's
architecture and support of OC-48c speeds could help Fore carve a niche in larger enterprises and ISPs looking for an edge device with robust throughput.

"The architecture is very flexible, and it will let users divide the switch fabric as they choose," Petrosky said.

The ASX-4000 will support various ATM Forum protocols including LANE 1.0 and LANE 2.0 for MPOA configurations. It will be available this summer and will be priced from $55,000 for a 10-Gbps chassis. A 40-Gbps chassis is priced at $145,000.

Hi Ed,

First of all, let me make one thing clear to ALL that I am Bullish on Fore and my reasons are stated in my earlier post.

Now, having said that let me answer your questions about taxes. If you look at the numbers closely, income before income taxes (ibit) this q was 16.884mm and for the previous 3q's 33.337mm for a total of 50.221mm. This would result in a tax liability of 0.30*50.221=15.0663mm (based on new tax rate of 30% retroactive 4/1/97) of which 11.335mm is already accounted for as of 12/31/97. That leaves 3.7313mm as stated in latest report and resulting in higher eps of 12.9c (resulting in effective tax rate of 22.09% this q). Now if the tax rate was 34%, the eps would be 16.884*.66/101.884mm=10.937c for the quarter and if the tax rate was 30% starting this q, the eps would be 16.884*.70/101.884=11.6c
I hope this clears up things and you all understand why I was not to happy about how we got 13c!

I am not hinting any manipulation on the part of management, whatever they have done is legal as far as I know.

< ES3810 and DT should help drive june Q
asx4000 should drive sept Q
stackable 10100 ethernet should drive dec Q
carrier class asx4000 and msc700 should drive mar Q>

I completely agree with this assessment except for June Q. ES4810 will be driving the sales along with ASX-1000 sales via DT channel. As you put it nicely, the next few quarters are shaping-up well!
