I was really referring to the future of the various Unix variants that CPQ now owns or supports. They have Tandem non-stop Unix which is SVR5, they have DEC Unix which is MACH kernel and pure 64 bit, they are also the dominant platform for both of SCO's offerings, Unixware and open server, which are 32 bit intel, one SVR5 and one a back rev... I think they will have to clean this up. You are right, there has been little engagement between DEC and MS around Unix (it has mostly been VMS affinity program) but given CPQ's close relationship with MSFT this would seem to be an opportunity to do both of the things you are suggesting - add functionality to NT (possibly through 64 bit NT development on Alpha) while combining their Unix plans, maybe around DEC Unix to leverage the Alpha chip. Likewise between DEC and Tandem CPQ would seem to have pretty much cornered the Clustering space, at least in terms of installed base and patent portfolio. I also agree with your point around 'too many strategic initiatives' but all the more reason to simplify the product lines. JMHO...
