Tony,

You just mentioned the most important part of this deal:

StrongARM!

Alpha technology has some nice features to it, and both Intel and AMD would like to cannibalize it for the nice features that could be applied elsewhere. Neither one of them is likely to actually manufacture the chip in any volume, because the demand just isn't there and is likely to stay "not there."

StrongARM however, is important. It's Intel's entry point to the set-top, Handheld PC, Palm Top devices, advanced cellphones, you name it. Currently they don't even have a foot in the door in those markets, and those markets are growing.

Believe me, Intel is not crazy about the fact that I can run Pocket Word on my WinCE HPC on a non-Intel processor. (The HP HPCs use a Hitachi MIPS processor.)
