Patrick: Were you absent that day in elementary school when your teacher explained the concept of time in language, i.e., "past tense" and "present tense"? One could have been something in the past, but not in the present. I presume you WERE ("past tense") an elementary school student then, but ARE ("present tense") not one now. That sort of thing.

Please don't take my word for it, though. Check it out with someone you trust.
