I think your 24 hour idea should be considered, but perhaps not right away. I'm not sure about the yearly fee though. I liked Slate but I just didn't feel that as a student I really needed to be wasting my time and paying money to do so. I know their readership is way down due to subscription. Building membership is critical for SI right now so I don't think anything that raised the price above current levels is wise. In spite of the lofty market valuations this industry is still early in its infancy. There's lots that should be done in terms of building and maintaining a customer base before trying to maximize near term profits. I don't think the SI three should do anything rash. Their patience so far makes me think they won't.
