Three New NICs Ease Speed
By Oliver Rist

Although Fast Ethernet has become a commodity,
there are still enhancements that NIC vendors can
offer besides standard 100Base-T support. Both
Intel and 3Com are doing their best, adding
management and performance features to their
industry-leading cards while still keeping their street
prices below $100. Intel has gone even further with
its Server Adapter line, offering great performance
and advanced bonding capabilities that can literally
rock your world.

We tested these cards in a straight 100Base-T
environment consisting of two Windows 95 nodes,
three Windows NT Workstation 4.0 nodes, a
Compaq ProLiant 800 running Windows NT Server
4.0 and a clone Pentium 90 machine acting as our
intraNetWare server. An Intel Fast Ethernet 10/100
hub was used during standard NIC testing, while the
Server Adapters also made use of an Nbase
100Base-T switch. All tests were run using
Ganymede Software Inc.'s Chariot 2.1 network
testing software......
