Holly,

I moved here from New Mexico. A few years ago we had an
epidemic of plague. It occurred in the Four Corners area
on Navajo land. There was *absolutely* no mention of possible
involvement of fleas as a vector. The CDC had conclusive
findings that it was transmitted by the deer tick.

However, fleas, particularly the cat flea (which inhabits
both cats and dogs as you are probably aware), are extremely
rare in New Mexico because of the high altitude and dry air.

I don't believe that there is *any* history of rabies in
the Hawai'ian Islands. In 1912, Hawai'i instituted
a 120-day quarantine for warm-blooded animals entering
the Territory. In 1997, the law was changed to allow
a 30-day quarantine contingent on prior implantation of a
micro-chip, the successful passing of two rabies antibody
tests (one pre-, other post-arrival), and the
pre-arrival administration of a number of
vaccinations within designated date ranges.

(Exempted from quarantine are animals coming from other
rabies-free regions such as the U.K. and Australia.
Many species of birds and snakes are completely prohibited
from entry.)

The process is quite complicated, and, if anything is missing
or it fails the second OIE-FAVN test, the animal will be held
for 120 days. Anyone considering 30-day quarantine needs to
start the process almost six months in advance of their pet's intended arrival.

Please tell me why you put flea collars in vacuum cleaner bags.
What purpose is it intended to serve?

David
