Holly, Well, it's good to know that I'm not the only person, in the only place, where fleas are a problem. It was upsetting for me to learn that my cat had fleas because I've always had cats (shared my house with three in Albuquerque) but none of them ever had fleas, and I'd never given it even the slightest thought. Once source I found (forget which) said the cat flea is not found at elevations over 5000 feet. Well, Albuquerque is about a mile high, so that might explain it. But right now my elevation is about 3 feet, and the beach is about a block away, and it's been raining every day for at least a while. And it didn't help any that the vet I brought my cat to was not very nice. He seemed to be disgusted, and turned his back on me, and left abruptly. Tina and I need to find a new vet. Also helping me somewhat is that I just got an e-mail from a friend of mine who *left* Kaua'i just before I arrived to move to Seattle. She said that her two cats *always* had at least a few fleas despite her using the once-a-month insecticide dispensed by the vet. Fleas were everywhere here, living in the carpeting. And her two cats were inside cats, never let out! It's been a difficult adjustment for both me and Tina. It's funny about the vacuum cleaner. Most of the things we do in life, the only reason we do them is because either we did it before, or we saw someone else doing it. When I work for a living I do risk analysis for the govt. on nuclear accidents. Aerosol transport and deposition and a whole bunch of other stuff, like making up numbers on how much would it cost to clean up the mess if they had a nuclear-weapon accident and spread plutonium all over. A new project coming up for me is estimating chemical risks, so hearing about people putting flea collars in their vacuum cleaner bags was very interesting. It's lonely here, so having you and Christine to talk to is very nice. Why don't you tell me something about yourselves. Are we the only ones here? I suppose I could go and read all your recent posts, but it seems like too much work. David
