Re: <Which BX motherboard would give me the most bang for its buck in the June/July time frame?> In fact, just after my post, I found an article mentioning that VIA may have found a legal loophole allowing them to produce slot 1 chipsets. Right now, Asus probably makes the best value boards. These boards are of high quality, and very overclockable. They allow you to override the autodetect bus speed. These is a variety of choices combining Wide Ultra2 SCSI and or 10/100 ethernet. Get yourself a PII-266 (or if you already have one) and run it at 3.5 x100. Get yourself a good fan (such as the PC Power and cooling fan). When prices drop in the next 6 months, you can buy a PII-400 or 450 or whatever. (You can't overclock these chips however, since they are frequency-locked). As for PC100 RAM, you may want to wait a bit and use your old RAM. According to Anand, the current PC100 modules do not use real 125MHz DRAM chips and Hitachi will be producing the proper chips next month. When more manufacturers produce these modules, the price differential between 66 and 100MHz modules will narrow. As to your third paragraph, I guess I tend to go to more of the low-down, DIY places that most people wouldn't want to go. These places get raided by the police every few weeks for their pirated CD-ROMs and VCDs :) Most of the shops in more upscale shopping arcades sell PII stuff as the profit margin is higher which helps pay the ridiculous Hong Kong rent. However, this profit margin is obviously not sufficient as a handful of these upscale shops are folding every week. Legend Computers is the largest computer manufacturer in China and has overtaken IBM and Compaq in market share in China. There is a compaign in China to use home grown products as the pendulum swings the other way. China is probably the fastest growing market for PCs in the world. In fact, Legend has lines of home PCs which use the K6. Adrian
