Ascend and Hybrid Networks Announce Reseller Agreement for Ascend's Networking Products

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 27, 1998--

Ascend Chosen as Vendor of Choice for Remote Access Server:

Will Facilitate Upstream Communications in

Cable Internet Access Applications

Ascend Communications, Inc., (NASDAQ:ASND), today announced that it has entered into a strategic Value Added Reseller (VAR) agreement with Hybrid Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:HYBR). This alliance will integrate Ascend's industry-leading MAX, MAX TNT WAN Access Switches, and Pipeline product line with Hybrid's cable and wireless broadband access equipment, to provide more end-to-end solutions for small- and medium-sized businesses.

"We are proud to be selected as Hybrid's 'best-of-breed' remote access server provider," said Kurt Bauer, Vice President of Product Management for Ascend's Access Switching Division. "High performance networking architecture is a vital component of this growing cable access market. Hybrid is in a perfect position to leverage our remote access server solutions for their competitive advantage."

Hybrid Networks manufactures broadband access equipment, providing customers with high-speed Internet access on one-way, two-way, wireless, and cable plant systems. Ascend's remote servers will allow for higher speeds on the upstream of one-way cable plants. Currently, 70 percent to 80 percent of Internet access customer traffic is downstream and Ascend's technology will enable considerable increases in upstream bandwidth for businesses when using telephone or ISDN as the return path. Hybrid's technology works with Ascend's remote access servers in any ISP location. This will result in a more reliable, scalable network with a greater capacity for increased usage. The Pipeline 85 is a perfect match with the Hybrid cable modem for small and medium-sized business solutions. It provides multiple Ethernet ports and supports ISDN for upstream high-volume usage.

Hybrid has recently switched to Ascend routers, citing higher speed and performance, and is currently evaluating Ascend's ATM products to develop additional customer solutions. "We found that Ascend's MAX family of remote access servers and its router technology to be the fastest, most scalable solutions we reviewed," said Jane Zeletes, Vice President of Marketing. "By offering Ascend products as part of our solution, Hybrid can now provide a number of fully integrated solutions from the headend, to the subscriber site. We believe this alliance will help create more applications of value, enabling the cable industry to be in a better position to meet residential, and small- and medium-sized business needs in the future."

Ascend is the market leader in WAN Access Switches, with over 40 percent of the analog ports deployed worldwide, according to market research firm Dell'Oro Group. Ascend's MAX and MAX TNT products enable enterprise customers and service providers to deploy remote access and internet dial-up access, as well as providing a wide range of additional features through Ascend's recently-announced True Access.
