jrh, INTC has publicly stated a desire to grow their business to cover all phases of the LAN as well as a strategic vision of the following (pulled from last quarterly report).

Corporate Strategic Investments

-- During the quarter, Intel closed approximately 20 new equity
investments totaling approximately $90 million, and also completed
the acquisition of Chips and Technologies, Inc. Some of the areas
the company invested in during the quarter included enhancement of
the PC for visual computing applications, the creation of new content
for the Internet, and advancement of residential broadband
connectivity for PCs.
These investments were made with the intent of expanding the computing industry and enhancing Intel's business
capabilities.

As far as acquistions, they recently acquired one of the low end LAN/HUB companies Dayna Communications.

They already compete with CSCO in some areas. Workgroup Enet switches and hubs, and they just introduced a lowend router.

LU taking BAY is more likely now given LU's recent acquistion of Livingston. NT could be a suitor of ASND, but I think FORE would be more likely given their current relationship.

Kind of leaves INTC, Alcatel, Nokia or IBM(???) to gobble up ASND.
