Analysts believe the Alpha could be part of AMD's own workstation segment strategy. AMD declined to comment, saying only that Alpha's positioning within the company will be revealed when the license is concluded "in the very near future." Compaq's chief executive, Eckhard Pfeiffer, has publicly stated that no decision on the fate of Alpha will be announced until Compaq's own acquisition of Digital is completed. "When it comes right down to it, the longevity of the Alpha processor is incumbent upon Compaq's plans," said Tony Massimini, microprocessor analyst at Semico. The FTC ruling means that "if Alpha is going to die, it's going to be because Compaq says so, not because chip suppliers don't want to supply it," Massimini said.
