Three reasons:

1. They buy additional visibility.
2. They take out a potential future competitor.
3. They believe they're paying less for something than it's worth.

Why would any software developer (Netscape) pay 50 times revenues (not earnings)for a search engine. They could develop their own for a lot less than $1B. Anyone long for this reason will be disappointed in my opinion. I believe all Search Engines will be paying higher prices to be on Netscapes [site]. They have their own traffic, they don't need the search engines traffic.
