<< 1000 fibers is a little high. >>

i confirmed the number with management. the first conduit, as you correctly point out, currently houses 96 fibers. it can however house over 500, as can the second conduit.

To all, I would point out that much of the information provided by Kelly may be found in the May Wired magazine available at your newsstand. It is worth reading.

The one point that I will bring up is that unlike some of its competitors, QWEST is not tied to legacy systems. GTE and others want to wean themselves off of their old architecture and smoothly transition to the new paradigm with out cannibalizing current market positions. Hungry young companies like QWEST and LEVEL3 don't have this problem holding them back and will make this transition a rocky one for the "established" telecos. Also, by granting access to potential competitors now, it is highly unlikey that QWEST say five years or so down the line can be accused of monopolistic practices or what ever the cause du jour the DOJ and state AJ are hot about at the moment.
