>>The unemployment rate for engineers is supposedly only 1%, and I'm one of them. It's not a good feeling, and it's especially frustrating because I have solid experience and credentials, and have been told by previous employers that I was a very valuable employee.<<

Three years ago I got layed off (fired more like it for cost reduction), Well I must have done over 50 interviews. Of that, I personally thought I was qualified for at least 40 of the posts. Now these companies were saying how hard it is to find good programers with the industry experience (video games). Now I am also a hardware geek and can design and debug many basic level systems, prob like simple video cards etc. I am also very good in technical trouble shooting and finding hard to find faults in system configurations and networks etc.. I didnt get one job offer, after interviews etc it was always, you are not qualified in what we are looking for, for this position. Heck after an year I was getting desperate, someone with my back ground and education and intelligence could not get a job in sillicon valley. Amazing.. But every where I looked there was always those postings for INS requirement to bring someone in on H1 visas. So I think the companies were just going through the formalities of interviewing people so they could tell the INS that they coudnt find qualified people. I know even the company I now work for does this since it costs them almost twice as much to hire US workers.
