It strikes me that individual artists and groups could chose to distribute their work via the web, bypassing the traditional music industry food chain. Mark ups from the artist through the final retailer must be astronomical.

I agree that piracy is a problem, but one that seems no more (or less) an issue than with distribution through conventional media, given the ease with which people can copy from CDs/tapes right now. Maybe an alternative to direct download of tracks through the web would be for the buyer to listen to and specify tracks he wants. The web music company would then burn a CD with the choices and send it through the mail, collecting monies as usual.
