I was reading local paper and came across this story on AlliedSignal where it stated the following..."For example, Allied is entering a nearly $2 billion telecommunications market for the first time with an optical switch designed to speed up Internet traffic. That could pit once- sleepy Allied against gorillas such as Lucent Technologies and Northern Telecom.

The switch can be tuned much like a TV to channel light in a fiber optic network. Low-cost polymers attached to tiny heaters do the trick, scientists say. Heat allows data to quickly change direction."

Does anyone know what kind of "optical switch" this can be? How it works? What's it all about? Sounds pretty interesting????

Ok... let's have it out, right here-

"GTE's choice of Fujitsu's Speedport DSL access multiplexer was somewhat of a surprise to the equipment vendor, which hadn't participated in any market trials, a Fujitsu spokesman said."

I know for a fact that there are some WSTL employees lurking on this board. This is my first question:

WHY DID WSTL LET THIS HAPPEN????

I've worked in sales... when you really want an order from your customer, you say "I'll do whatever it takes to get your business." GTE is high-profile. This initial order would have been a tremendous boost to WSTL's credibility in the industry and with the telecoms. WSTL would have benefitted even by selling to GTE on this contract at a substantial loss- JUST FOR THE FUTURE BUSINESS AND THE ADD ON SALES BY FOLLOW-ME TELECOMS. Fujitsu WASN'T EVEN BIDDING FOR THIS JOB!

This is my second question:
Is WSTL management or the sales force incompetent??

Sorry for the hostile tone. If there is something I have missed, PLEASE post.

Thanks,
Kevin
