( BW)(GEMSTAR-INTERNATIONAL)(GMSTF) Gemstar Interactive Program Guide Launches in Japan

Business & Technolgy Editors

PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 17, 1998--Gemstar International Group Ltd. (Nasdaq:GMSTF) Friday announced that televisions incorporating its interactive program guide (named "G-Guide") are now available in the Japan consumer electronics market after having received approval from the appropriate regulatory agencies.

In March, Hitachi Corp. announced its W32-GX1 model, a 32-inch-wide screen television with G-Guide. W32-GX1 has a planned production of 60,000 units per year and is scheduled for sale in the Tokyo area beginning April 10. Hitachi stated that additional models with G-Guide will be introduced later this year. Other manufacturers have also expressed interest in introducing G-Guide-equipped televisions.

Content for supporting the G-Guide is provided by Tokyo News, a leading provider of television program listing and the publisher of TV Guide in Japan. Data is transmitted by TBS, a major broadcast station in the Tokyo area. Data transmission for Osaka area and the rest of Japan is expected to commence within the year.

"We are very excited about this development, since Japan is such an important market. We were originally planning to launch Japan later this year. This ahead-of schedule launch has come as a pleasant surprise for us, especially in light of the regulatory hurdles we needed to overcome," said Henry Yuen, chief executive officer.

"We attribute this early breakthrough to the cooperative efforts of our partners Hitachi, Tokyo News and TBS."
