Re the DEC purchase, I spent some time discussing it with a friend who still works at DEC this morning. He works in a software engineering team. He said his mgmt has given the troops in his group the message that engineers at DEC have nothing to worry about as part of Compaq, but that the future for some managers and administrative staff is less clear. Not necessarily negative, but less clear. Apparently a lot of DEC middle mgmt have been dusting off their technical skills in preparation for reassignment or worse. I don't know what Compaq's plans are, but this was the view from one current DEC employee. Take it for what you will.

It takes little imagination to envision significant reduction in "non-essential" staff once Compaq integrates DEC. If so, that adds to the DEC "division"s bottom line. Whether there's a net increase or decrease in CPQ's net margin after the integration remains to be seen.
