Pete, TIGHTHOLE status is invoked any time a well is an exploration well. It is invoked to try and prevent competing companies from finding out what you have and then competing on future land sales. It is sometimes difficult to do. Oil companies also hire "scouts" to try and sniff out information from the locals in the area, bars, eavesdropping on cellular communications, etc....

However, it could also be invoked, I suppose, to prevent bad news from leaking out which could cause a run on the stock. For very large, publicly traded companies, the news would not effect the stock much either way. For junior, spec stocks, either bad news or good news could affect the stock drastically. So, you would probably want to keep your cards close to the chest. But keep in mind the current success rate on exploration wells.....10%.

I am not a shareholder... I already have a junior spec stock drilling high risk, high reward wells: Wolverine Energy (WVE)

<If tight hole status continues past May 15th>... you are allowed to keep information about a new drill confidential for 1 year in Alberta. It might be a long wait. And even then, will the release be technical enough to tell you what you want to hear? Just providing facts to help everyone understand the biz a bit better.
