I actually had a huge arguement with one of Datek's customer rep. about this. She said only MM can buy at the bid, which is absolutely incorrect. Anyone can buy at the bid, just put a limit order in. It may take a while to get filled, depending upon how the stock is moving, and who else is at the bid. Even if there are MMs at the bid, you generally will get some shares, perhaps not your whole order (of course, if there is a market order in ISLD, you will get filled before anyone else!).

Of course, if you are in a hurry to trade, buy at the ask. Of course, the way Datek computes your portfolio value, you will instantly loose money!
