For trading S&P futures, margin requirement as of April '98 is $12,562 initial, maintenance is $10,050, so selling options or going long or short the underlying future is out of the question for a $10k account. Just FYI.

Sorry, I should have clarified that the margins stated were for Jack Carl which is a division of ED& F Man International. The margins can change monthly. You can trade S&P minis for $2512 initial and $2010 maintenance margins however. Many of the futures accounts require similar margin; however, some may vary. Ergo, this addendum.
