Quik and I would play poker or Risk for the most part to pass the time before going to work the next day. When we finally did get our first checks, it felt like heaven compared to the prior week or so when things were so lean. And of course, when one has money, one wants to party. We met a guy at work who was cool. He hooked us up with some vitamin A (white triangle - 25). Quik was an over indulger deluxe. He took three hits one day after work. The next day at work, he was constantly having to go to the bathroom. Somehow or another the "A" messed up his digestive tract in such a way as to cause him to bleed when he had to go to the bathroom, and it also made him want to frequently. No doubt, the end result was worse than the high which he had sought. At some point in the midst of my stay in SLC, I got my tax refund check. Things got a whole lot easier for a short period of time after that. One of the first things I did was go to the grocery store and spend I did. It was nice actually having food in the house. But it wasn't too long before I realized that my money didn't seem to be going as far as it should. I mean there were two other people besides myself, where was their money going? I began to feel like I was unnecessarily carrying my companions and was getting little return on my investment. One day, Quik and I were on our way to work, and he asked me to light one up. I told him I thought we should wait til after work. He then told me matter-of-factly that I could light one or get out of the car (which by this time he had already been in an accident with, and then bought back from the insurance company with part of the settlement. The front end of the car was partially manggled enough that the insurance company had totaled the car. The front bumper on the passenger side was hanging only inches off of the ground). This thought did not particularly set well with me in more ways than one. As a passenger, I only vaguely knew where we were, because I rarely paid attention to how we got from one place to another, so getting back to the house would have been quite a challenge for me. But even if I did get back, what was I going to do when he finally got off of work and got back to the house. So I lit one up. Quik had managed to talk one of the supervisors into selling him a truck that the supervisor had had for sale. Quik was going to pay our supervisor so much a week while we worked there for a truck which also had a camper shell. Quik was going to take posession of the truck on the following friday after work and then we were all going to take it up to the mountains for the weekend. That was the plan. Correction, that was their plan. When Quik pulled his little stunt in the car with the doob, I started to set in motion another plan, and it didn't include my companions. I could see I was in a lose - lose situation, and the only way to rectify the situation was to leave it. I also knew that had I discussed this with Quik prior to, that I could not control any unseen variables which may arise because of it. I had to leave SLC and not look back. Quik had something to take care of right after work and was going to be gone for awhile, and then we were going to head up to the mountains. I decided to walk down to the 7-11 which was at the end of the block for a snack (about a quarter of a mile away {SLC has the biggest city blocks I've ever seen anywhere which isn't saying much seeings how I haven't been to to many places]). As I was walking back to the house, I saw one of the neighborhood kids driving down the street, so I flagged him down. I asked him if he would take $20 to drive me to the airport. He said he would, but had to run an errand first. I guess while I was down at the convience store, I must have called the airport to find a flight out of town, cause somewhere along the way I had made the arrangements to catch a flight out of SLC to Denver. The cost of the flight was $90 and was scheduled to leave around 11 p.m. at night. I was getting low on money and knew that if I didn't leave soon, I could be in for some hard times, times I wasn't going to put myself through if I didn't have to. I hurried back to the cottage, packed my stuff and waited.....
