Direct TV and USSB use MPEG2 transmission.

Conversion to analog formats (S-Video, NTSB, and PAL) is done by the STB to get it TV/VCR compatible. The Uplink MPEG gear is from Compression Labs Inc (CLI) and has been operational for years. The USSB Uplink is in St. Paul and I have seen the system on several occasions. The latest MPEG2 specification covers DTV resolutions.
