Stock Bull: I think the answer to your quandary is in your post. You are talking trading (in your IRA no less) and Brinker is talking investing in general. As an investor, what do you care if the market goes down 5% and change on a correction if it will go back to new highs especially with personal money? Why take the tax bite? Why play the timing game if you are not so inclined? As a trader trying to catch the swings in your IRA, you might think differently to what Brinker says and take defensive action in time of extended valuation and too much bullishness. Seems prudent to me.

You may well be hearing what Brinker says only in the context of your activities as a trader in your IRA, while Brinker is speaking to investors in general who are 401(k)-all-the-way kind of folk. The only reason Brinker may be unclear to you may be that he is not talking to your situation specifically and that is a hard thing to do given Brinker has 4m listeners in a given weekend unless, of course, you call him and talk to him one-on-one.
