George,

<<This McData news seems huge to me. EMC grossed $3.75B last year, compared with $10.75B for Sun. I don't have the actual breakdown in the proportions of each revenue stream that was storage but EMC's is probably much higher. This really makes the FC switching biz a lot more competitive.>>

I think the McData news COULD BE huge, but initially, I can't see it affecting Ancor nearly as much as Brocade. On the surface, it appears that Brocade could potentially lose an OEM. In order for it to affect Ancor, McData would have to market their switch as an independent company from EMC. (That might be difficult, given the close relationship between EMC and McData.)

It will still be interesting to watch for an announcement from McData. I'm curious what the specifications and pricing are, and what they (McData) thought was important. We should compare their offering to SilkWorm and MKII.

On another note, I finally got through two weeks of industry magazines over the weekend, and noticed a new Ancor ad. I think it was in Data Communications magazine. (I tore out the page, but unfortunately it doesn't indicate what magazine or what page number.) It is the same style ad as before, with the saxophone player. They mention disaster recovery, mechanical CAD/CAM, video imaging, seismic imaging, SANS, LANS, and network-attached storage. Here is one quote that we will appreciate: "And proven scalability, with the largest single installed network in the world." Finally!
