IBM and Hewlett-Packard Co. plan to
introduce several new notebook PCs
next week.

A trio of ThinkPads will be on IBM's plate, while HP is expected
to introduce as many as three new OmniBook models at an
event in New York.

IBM (IBM) will unveil three new models each in its ThinkPad
600 and 380 series along with two new ThinkPad 770 models,
all of which feature Intel Corp.'s mobile Pentium II processor.

The Armonk, N.Y., company will roll out the thin-and-light
ThinkPad 600, priced starting at less than $3,000. A high-end
ThinkPad 600 will include a 266MHz Pentium II processor, a
13.3-inch thin-film transistor display, 32MB of RAM, a 4GB
hard drive and a 24-speed CD-ROM drive for $4,500, sources
said.

The new ThinkPad 770E and 770ED models will offer
14.1-inch screens at prices starting in the $5,000 range. The
770ED, for example, will be configured with a 266MHz Pentium
II processor, 64MB of RAM, an 8.1GB hard drive and a
DVD-ROM drive for $5,799, sources said.

IBM's new ThinkPad 380 models will include the 380XD, which
offers a 233MHz Pentium II processor, a 12.1-inch dual-scan
display, 32MB of RAM, a 4GB hard drive and a 24-speed
CD-ROM drive. It will cost less than $3,000, sources said.

HP (HWP) , meanwhile, is expected to formally introduce its
OmniBook 4100 and 3100 models.

The OmniBook 4100 series, which will start at about $4,000,
includes several models based on Intel's mobile Pentium II
processors, sources said. A high-end version of the 4100 will
offer a 266MHz Pentium II processor and a 13.3-inch screen,
they said.

The OmniBook 3100 will offer the new Intel processors coupled
with a 13.3-inch display, the sources said.

According to sources, HP, of Palo Alto, Calif., may also
introduce an OmniBook 2100 based on Intel's Pentium
Processor with MMX Technology and featuring a 12.1-inch
display.

I hope it will be dull but I suspect it will be a wild ride.
