It also does not have to be technical. Dell is the most innovative in the business in terms of process and business model. and many of those innovations involve INTC and especially MSFT. For example Dell has the best understanding in the business of the economics behind the Select agreements which exist between MSFT and major corporate customers, enabling them to fashion deals which are lower for the whole deal even when Dell part of the order is higher priced. They have stung CPQ and IBM on several big deals with this tactic. They don't even need to work with MSFT on this, just have the best knowledge of how MSFT does business. BTW my understanding is that MSD has the closest personal relationship with MSFT sales force of any of the major vendors (i.e. MSD and Ballmer), has a friendly but not particularly close relationship on the product side (Maritz, Allchin).
My point is that Peter W was not 'wrong' if we limit his statement to pure technical contribution - Dell's innovation is around that technology, not within it. Peter needs to be educated, not flamed.
