Exactly - this is where Dell puts the wood behind the arrow. Best integration, best understanding of how to get the most out of the systems, best tested (and thus highest out-of-box quality).
This is not the same as innovation in base technology. For years, DEC has been a strong innovator in core technology, while almost ignoring the areas Dell concentrates on. Guess which model is more successful? I would be disappointed if Dell started investing in core technology innovation - Dell has much stronger growth than IBM, HWP and CPQ who are strong in core R&D. Assume CPQ's 300 on-site people cost them $100K / yr each (which is low if burden is included). That is $30M annually. Such investment would detract from Dell's growth.
