Informix Delivers World Record On TPC-D 300GB Performance Benchmark; Informix Dynamic Server and Sun Starfire Combine to Set New Throughput Performance Mark

MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 27, 1998--Informix Corporation, Inc. (NASDAQ:IFMX), the leading provider of innovative database technology, announced today record-breaking throughput for a multi-user 300 gigabyte TPC-D(R) benchmark.

This result reinforces the company's leadership position in the high-performance data warehousing arena. Informix(R) achieved this TPC-D result on a Sun(R) Enterprise 10000 server.

The combination of Informix Dynamic Server(R) with the Advanced Decision Support Option(tm) and Extended Parallel Option(tm), and Sun E10000 SMP technology achieved the highest TPC-D throughput on a 300GB database while running with multiple concurrent users. The Informix/Sun TPC-D benchmark delivered a leading throughput of 3,343.9 QthD@300GB with price/performance of $1,400 ($/QphD@300GB) and TPC-D Power of 8,114.3 QppD@300GB (see table below).

The benchmark proves Informix's ability to provide leading TPC-D results even in multistream tests. Multistream is a database's ability to handle multiple complex data warehouse queries in parallel, thereby delivering continuous performance even under stress of multiple concurrent queries or when many users are accessing the data warehouse simultaneously.

"By running this benchmark with multiple streams we have demonstrated our superior capabilities in handling contentions, sharing of resources, and management of complex queries when the system is under stress," said Nasir Ameireh, senior product marketing manager at Informix. "In fact, we consistently outperform the competition in the single stream and multistream user tests."

"This capability becomes increasingly important as data warehouses and data marts spread throughout a company," continued Ameireh. "No longer are only a handful of decision makers and analysts accessing these vital databases; today, many more users are leveraging the power of data warehouses. Our record-breaking throughput proves that Informix Dynamic Server performance will not be adversely affected when more users access the resource simultaneously."

Informix and Sun also hold the world-record one terabyte TPC-D benchmark result, published in February 1998, which exceeded performance numbers of proprietary databases from NCR's Teradata and IBM's DB2. With the best throughput performance on a 300 GB data warehouse demonstrated in today's benchmark testing, Informix continues to dominate performance for both large data warehouses and data marts.

"The combination of Sun and Informix consistently ranks at or near the top in TPC-D benchmarks for power, throughput and price/performance. Customers benefit from these more effective solutions and lower cost of ownership versus competitive solutions," said Shahin Khan, director of marketing, Data Center and High Performance Computing Group at Sun Microsystems. "Sun's Starfire running Informix provides customers with a highly scalable SMP system with the capacity and multi-user throughput needed to support business-critical enterprise data warehouses."

About the System and the Benchmark

The system used for this benchmark was a Sun Enterprise 10000 with 64 336 MHz UltraSPARC II CPUs running the Solaris 2.6 operating system. The storage subsystem consisted of Sun RSM SPARCstorage technology employing RAID-1 for data protection. Informix Dynamic Server with Advanced Decision Support and Extended Parallel Options was used to implement the benchmark.

The Transaction Processing Performance Council is an independent organization formed by member companies across the computer industry. The TPC-D benchmark examines system performance in a decision support workload. It differs from OLTP benchmarks in testing system performance in workloads with few transactions involving a large amount of data and queries of greater complexity. For more information about TPC benchmarks and results, please refer to the Transaction Processing Performance Council Web site at tpc.org.
