David, it is true that we live in a cold and callous world. Your post about betting on executions reminded me of a problem we had in California recently, where the guards would force the prisoners to fight with each other, gladiator style, and then fire on them to kill some of them, and justifying it by saying the prisoners were fighting!! I believe the worst offenders have now been arrested, but the prison guards' union put up a huge stink, and there was some kind of cover up as well by the guards, so it took years to bring them to justice.
