The scenario I was responding to assumed that hospitals were kicking people out as a prophylactic measure due to lack of insurance, not because of any actual Y2K problems. Thus, government could save the day because its internal problems hadn't started happening yet.

Now, once systems actually do start failing, things get a whole lot more complicated. Personally, I'm going to avoid air travel between 12/1/99 and at least 1/31/00. At best, I figure I'll get stranded somewhere. At worst, well, I'd rather not find out the hard way if navigation systems need to be Y2K compliant.
