Chris, I am sure you would agree that we have made astounding advances in technology but, for some reason we have not grown emotionally over thousands of years. Christianity, should not be called a religion, but it is viewed that way because man thinks that he is able to lay up treasure in heaven and that he must somehow earn his salvation. We have always gotten the cart before the horse. Salvation and an ongoing relationship with God is based on grace and not works. The Holy Spirit will inspire us on to greater things that is not works but guidance by the spirit of God.
All of the mean spirited things that have happened in the name of Christianity were not leading of the Holy Spirit but works of men under the guise of Christianity.
Chris, I invite you to sincerely ask God to prove Himself to you. He is a God of love but you must belong to Him. The seal of the Holy Spirit is proof to you that you are His. If have not asked God's Holy Spirit to enter your heart than you can call yourself anything you wish, but in reality you will not be His.
It is something that must not be taken lightly because the only way to receive this gift is through humility and belief that Jesus died and shed his blood for you and that he was raised on the third day and intervenes for us constantly to his father, God.
In sincerity, ask Him to prove himself to you and I promise you that he will show himself through some experience or event in your life.
Regards,
James
