In reference to the analogy.

1. Clearly, America still needs oil
2. but America is also much more information\technology driven today than it was 25 years ago.
3. The oil embargo was a major inconvenience in 73/74 to be sure but it did not shut down the country (Less than 30% of our oil came from OPEC at that time). We had enough slack in the system so it was possible to tighten the belt a bit, so to speak.
4. Y2K problems have the potential to cause much more havoc than the oil embargo did and they will be much harder to find and adapt to, due too the ubiquitous nature of the problem and interdependence of systems.
