That's consistent with what I was saying. Dell is very strong with validation and test, their record on the Win98 beta board was also strong, lots of deep analysis and testing of the corner cases. My point is not to disparage Dell but to say that they put their development into things that add to their ability to execute, like test and integration, not into things that have a higher cost and lower return. My idea of core technology development is ASIC or raw silicon development, core OS development, etc. I would bet that the ROI on Dell's R&D is 10 times that of IBM or DEC, precisely because they don't do the low level development.

Great post on DELLs contribution with the 'bug spray'! I didn't know that, but that may explain why the chips overall are getting better and better. This is just another great contribution that DELL is making!
