I've been a UNIX sys admin for about nine years and I agree with a lot that you say. However, I do still see the occasional ''panic: synching disks" (actually, it's "syncing", sorry to be picky) message. We have several Unix servers that will run for months at a time, but there are many more crashes than there are power outages. We like to schedule a reboot if a machine has been up for more than 90 days. Just yesterday, one of our IBM Unix systems crashed.
However, definitely, our NT's crash a lot more than our Unix systems, probably by an order of magnitude at least, but NT is taking some market share from Unix, at least at the desktop level, anyway. Large enterprise servers will remain Unix for a long time. We just received a new Sun E10000 a couple of days ago. The E10000 is really a mainframe that runs Unix. As always, JMHO.

Isn't this (UNIX with a GUI interface) what Apples Rhapsody is all about? And easy porting of Mac software solves the app shortage.

I have read rumors that AAPL intends to make it run on Linux as well as BSD-Unix. Will it really be a threat to MSFT?
