Why would a generator have to be Y2K certified?

Brian: I don't believe you will find generator motors with any "chips" unless you had a remote/electric starter and chances are no chips involved there as well; at least anything embedded and time/date sensitive.

I haven't been in the market for a generator for 10 years but at that time the top of the line in performance and reliability were made by Onan. Things may have changed since then.
