The Hum of Search Engines Is Music to Netscape's Ears

By SAUL HANSELL
The search is on for search engines.

A number of companies -- including Netscape Communications and some big
traditional media players -- are looking to build or buy their own
Internet search services.

These services, initially meant only to help Internet users find
information from among the millions of pages of online material, have
now become the primary gateway to cyberspace for many people.

Netscape is in the midst of high-stakes negotiations to choose a company
to provide the central search function for its ambitious new Internet
site. The second tier of search businesses, including Lycos, Infoseek
and the Snap service of Cnet, are actively negotiating with Netscape,
people involved in the negotiations say. The two larger search services
-- Yahoo and Excite -- have talked to Netscape, too, but are said to be
less interested.
