Steve,
I would say no but then would wonder when she was not showing her belly button anymore if she did it anyhow. I think it's a form of mutilation myself. I will probably face that myself some day with my little girl.

Have a good evening,

Bob

Steve, there is a philosophy of parenting which suggests that some things be saved for later. This would support the very gradual use of make-up, and perhaps pierced ears for younger teens. I have a fourteen-year-old girl, who also wanted to have her belly button pierced, but her father and I are insisting that she wait until she is eighteen to do that, and also to get any tattoos or second piercings in her ears.

All of this philosophy is loosely based on the hope that if young teenagers are slowed down a bit, and always have some new privilege to look forward to, they will not be having sex and using drugs by sixteen. The really nice, respectable girls at my daughter's school definitely are somewhat conservative, without any body piercings. I think it also sends boys messages that these girls come from overly permissive homes, or have parents who do not supervise them very well. I am not sure these are the messages most parents want conveyed by the appearance of their teenagers.

In the end, parenting is intuitive. You can listen to many opinions, but then you need to trust your own decisions.
